Grand slam for the Conservatives The Conservatives chalked up a grand slam of four runaway victories in yesterday's by-elections to give Mr. Wilson and the Labour Party their biggest setback since they came to power over three years ago. In the three seats the Government were defend- ing-Dudley, Meriden and Acton-substantial Labour majorities were converted to handsome majorities for the Tories. And at Warwick and Leamington the Conservatives increased their winning margin from 8,697 to 21,922. Taking the four constituencies together, the Labour vote dropped from 105,286 at the general election to 49,955, while the Conservative vote rose from 94,439 in 1966 to 102,516. The average swing from the Government to the Conservatives was 18.4 per cent, compared with 10.8 per cent at the South Kensington by-election a fortnight ago-before the Budget.
