President Baffled By Negro Riots FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT WASHINGTON, AUG. 20 President Johnson today denounced the Los Angeles riots. and said that the Negroes who took part in them were no more fighting for civil rights than men of the Ku-Klux-Klan with white sheets on their backs. They bore no relation to the orderly struggle for civil rights that had ennobled the past decade. The bitter years preceding the riots, the death of hope where hope existed. and the sense of failure no doubt led to the riots. But they did not explain them. He was baffled and the world was baffled. The President. who was addressing Negro leaders taking part in a confer- ence on equal employment opportunity . said that the Civil Rights Act was a key to hope, but only a key. It could not provide the skills for employment, or reverse at once the melancholy currents sweeping millions of hopeless men to crime and violence. MINISTER SIIOT DEAD HAYNEVILLE, ALABANLM. Aug. 21.-All Episcopal minister was shot dead and a Roman Catholic priest wounded in a shotgun blast in a shop here today. Thc two white men had earlier in the day been released from gaol after being arrested during civil rights demonstra- tions in the district.
