Explorer's Quest Among Savages Mr. Wilfred Thesiger on Monday night gave a lecture in the Hall of the Royal Geographical Society on the Hawash River and the Aussa Sultanate of Abyssinia. Accompanied by Mr. David Haig Thomas, Mr. Thesiger left England in August of last year with the intention of tracing the Hawash River to its source. Not only was the expedition successful in accomplishing this task, but Mr. Thesiger also collected much valuable information about the little-known Dankali country and its inhabitants. The explorers brought back 880 specimens of birds, comprising 187 varieties, of which four appear to be new subspecies. The exploration of the Dankali country has always been handicapped by. the savage disposi- tion of the inhabitants, and only in Aussa, where the Sultan rules with an iron hand, are peace and security to be found. Mr. Thesiger was well received by this ruler, and in his lecture he dealt with the Sultanate of Aussa in some detail. V An account of Mr. Thesiger's journey appeared in Thze Times of July 31 and August 1, 2, and 3. EXPLORER'S QUEST AMONG -SAVAGES MR. WILFRED THESIGER ON THE DANKALI COUNTRY
