Sex Teaching In Schools. TO TIIE EDITOR OF TllE TIMES. Sir,-Our attention has been drawn to the recent report of the London Education Committee on the important question of ses hygiene. A special meeting of t.he lady viec-presidents and lady members of council of the Woomen's Imuperial health Association was accordingly called to discuss the report, the following being present :-Mrs. Mary Scharlieb, L.D., fiss Christine Murrell. M-D., Mi5s Sophia Seekings, M.D., Mirs. Arthur Thesiger, Mrs. T. Aitken Dick, and Miss 'Jorah March, B.8c. After carefiul consideration the following resolutions were unanimously passed and directed to be sent to the London Coulty Council prior to the Council meeting on Tuesday, May 26:- "We cordialy welcome the report of the sub- comnmittee of the London County Council on the teaching of sex hygiene in schools, but would venture to hope that they will see their way to arrange for the adequate instruction of teachers in training and wiU provide instruction in the evening institutes for the young people themselves and also for parents." - We are somewhat apprehensive that the dis- tribution of memoranda to girls on leaving school without such provision as above indicated would be dangerous, as they are apt to fall into the wrong hands and have been found to do more harm than good in other countries. This danger, howvever, is greatly ininAmized if the way bas been prepared by a suitable biological and hygienic instruction."- "Further we would venture to suggest the addition to the prcsent syllabus of physiology of a perfectly simple section dealing with the organs and functions of reproduction and written as simply ns t.hese s ections on the organs of respiration and circula- tion.f The whole question is Such an importattt one and the issues at stake are so grave that it has been thought well to take this step in the interests of the youth of the nation. While quite appreciating the difficulties attending school instruction in sex hygiene owing to the diverse home conditions of the children, we believe that in time these difficulties will be surmounted once the teachers and parents have received such instruction as will make judicious cooperation possible between the home and the schooL It was felt that the mere issuing of printed memoranda might in many cases be actually harmfud without arrangements being made for some sort of preliminary instruction. We would therefore beg that the barring clause- that in no circumstances shovil sex hygiene be introduced into class teaching "-be nodifled by some qualifying clause naking it posible to intro- duce some form of such instructFon later, shoud experience prove its desirability; Yours faithfully. x: MURAY LESLI1 3tD.
