Promenade Concerts. The first cL]ssical night of the season of promenade concerts at Queen's-hall, which took place last night, gave an opportunity of gauging Mr. PA. J. WVood's capacities as a conductor more fully Than was possible at the opening conoert. It may be said at once that his reading of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony proved him a musician of fine ability. In the more delicate portions he showed an exquisite tenderness and a remarkAable comprehension of the subtle contrasts in which the score abounds. A capital performance of the Freisliit.z overture showed that he is equally mastez of broad and dignified effects. Altogether, Mr. Wood's d6but, for such it may be considered, was little short of a trimnph, and augurs happily for the succens of the season. The concert opened with Beethoven's brilliant and effective Kenig Stepkan overture, which was capitally played, and the programme also included one of Liszt's rhaDsodies and a pretty dance from Goring Tho_mas's - sB eradae. The singers of the evening were me. BelUe Cole, Mr. Iver M'Rzy, and Mr. Waekin Mlls, who sang familiar music with their usual success. Miss Annie Fnuller, who appeared for the firt time in England, has a fine soprauo voice, and sang Elisabeth's greeting from Tannhiduzr effectively. A rather marked tendency to sing out of tune may be charitably put down to nervousness, but the indistinct- ness of her enunciation is a fault which calls for instant correction. The audience was large and highly appre- ciative-so much so, indeed, that it might be worth Mr. Newman's while to consider the advisability of having classical nights more often than once a week.
